Karen lives in Charleston, South Carolina with husband Mark Finlay as they divide their time between Washington, D.C., the UK and Ireland, and the rest of the world.
As a scientific professional and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (CChem MRSC), Karen has over 25 years experience and has devoted much of her professional career to analytical chemistry, the practical application of science in sensitive arenas, and in focusing on societal challenges.
Karen’s professional training and experience leads her to believe a scientific analytical approach should be taken to counter threats to our own health and well-being, and to national security and other existential crises.
During the COVID-19 Coronavirus Crisis Karen expertise was in high demand as she supported a multinational team, led from the United States, helping to coordinate a collaborative effort by preeminent scientists and technologists seeking to identify the unique molecular signature of COVID-19 and utilize mobile technology to identify the presence of antibodies.
Karen has actively supported initiatives around peace, reconciliation and post-conflict transformation in Ireland since the 1998 Good Friday Peace Agreement in Northern Ireland, and has enjoyed developing relationships with men and women in leadership from across the island of Ireland, from Europe, and the United States.
Karen is passionate about mentoring and equipping the next generation of leaders in business, public service and civic society and, as a Fellow of the CS Lewis Institute, has been a Mentor to the US Naval Academy CSLI College Associates Program, and the C.S. Lewis Fellows Program in South Carolina.
Karen is a founder Director of Leaders and Followers Foundation, a 501(c)(3), and is actively involved in mentoring men and women in national and corporate leadership.
Karen believes every worthwhile initiative should begin with a cup of tea and, as an “ambassador of reconciliation” works with and in support of leaders and peacemakers around the world.
When not engaged in loving her family and supporting these efforts, Karen enjoys the thrill of skiing down mountains at top speed slightly out of control!
